This week we’re highlighting employment law associate Jenna Rangel, a San Diego native who shares her North Park home with her husband Pedro and her one-year-old son Santiago.
Why San Diego?
When you’re born and raised in this weather, you can’t live anywhere else!
What inspired you to pursue a career in law?
It was a slow progression from a Business Law class during undergrad, to a job in a law firm after undergrad, to the USD paralegal program, to a job as a paralegal, and finally to law school. All along the way, it felt like I was heading in the right direction, even if I didn’t set out with a clear plan.
Why did you choose to pursue plaintiff’s work?
It actually chose me, and I am so happy it did! I spent my first three and a half years as a lawyer doing employment defense work (among other areas). When the partners of that firm decided to split up and go their own ways, I started applying for other employment defense jobs. But, in a twist of fate, my resume ended up in the hands of Haeggquist & Eck. The change was challenging, but the work is so much more rewarding.
What has been your most exciting moment as a lawyer?
Settling cases never gets old. It’s always exciting to see your hard work pay off and to give your clients wonderful news.
What’s your perfect SD day?
A morning walk in Balboa Park, an afternoon at the beach (usually Mission Bay or Coronado), and a happy hour on a patio.
I don’t leave home without my…
Cell phone and my bag of emergency toiletries.
Favorite leisure activity?
Napping in the sun.
What’s something people would be surprised to learn about you?
My dad is a commercial fisherman and I grew up regularly travelling to places like Samoa and Guam and other smaller islands to visit him. We’d spend our days on beaches (some with shipwrecks that we could explore), playing soccer with the locals on the docks, and exploring my dad’s boat.
Everyone is so supportive and so much fun! They truly value their employees, and you can feel that every day.
