You Hometown: San Jose, California

Family stats: Married, two children

Neighborhood: Carmel Valley/Del Mar Mesa

Why San Diego:  I have had the great pleasure to live in several wonderful cities in both Northern and Southern California, and I have really enjoyed what each location has offered.  It was a lucky draw of the cards that resulted in my family relocating to San Diego.  San Diego offers so many opportunities, both professional and personal, that I often consider it to be a magical combination of all of the dynamic cities that I have had the fortune to call “home”.

What inspired you to pursue a career in law?  I knew I wanted to be a lawyer from a very young age. As a child, I found comfort in “rules” and knowing how to utilize the rules to achieve a favorable outcome.  When I was young, one of the most famous lawyers in the Bay Area was Melvin Belli, and I recall being quite interested in media concerning his trial work and successes.  All “signs” pointed to becoming a lawyer one day.

Why did you choose to pursue plaintiffs work?  I started my legal career as a Staff Attorney at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission because I enjoyed wearing the “white hat” and being on what I considered to be the side of “justice”.  When I transitioned to private practice, helping those harmed by the misconduct of others was a natural path to follow, and one where I knew that each day I would be driven to fight hard and never have to doubt the veracity of the arguments I was making in court.

What has been your most exciting moment working in the law? There have been so many exciting moments, never a dull day.  I would not be able to pick one in particular, but stand out moments include victory in a particular Ninth Circuit appeal, my time spent in Washington D.C. as a young lawyer receiving training while employed by the SEC, and the day I started working at HAE.

Favorite “locals-only” SD spot or activity?  It is not “locals only”, but the beaches from Torrey Pines to Del Mar are among my favorite SD locations, as are the fabulous restaurants along the beach, such as Poseidon.  I suppose I would add to that the delight that is called Cardiff Crack from the Cardiff Seaside Market – to which I was introduced on a camping trip to San Elijo State Beach.

What’s your perfect SD day? Any day in San Diego is perfect!

I don’t leave home without… having iced tea chilling in the fridge.

Favorite leisure activity? Enjoying a cup of coffee on a calm morning.

What’s something people would be surprised to learn about you?   I have a hard time imaging what may be left to surprise others in this day and age, but I suppose that many people are skeptical that lawyers really want to do the right thing or are always honest.  I am comforted in working at a firm that would rather turn down a fee or not take a case if we truly do not believe our client has been harmed in a manner that gives rise to a valid claim under the law.

If I could have dinner with anyone in history, currently it would be Ruth Bader Ginsburg because of her amazing record of surviving multiple bouts of cancer while maintaining an active career.  Her wisdom and intellect are just icing on the cake for the dinner party!

Why HAE?   HAE has the ideal combination for a law firm – strong legal ethics, dedication to serving the needs of its clients, active community involvement, and the good sense to know that work-life balance matters for everyone.
